In 2002 I lived in New York, and walking around Manhattan began to think about the relationship between New Yorkers and the land beneath the urbanscape. I thought of animals and early residents carving tracks into the island. Tracks that respond to geography and climate, and I could see the present roads of Manhattan having a direct connection and dialogue with the past. I researched the history of the island and made this series of paintings using roads maps of the lower end of the island where early settlement began.
