Ed van der
Kooy (1956):
After studying at The Royal Academy of The Hague Ed van der Kooy has become
fascinated and strongly influenced by eastern cultures.
Over the last twenty years he has travelled widely in Nepal and the surrounding
countries. Exploring the Himalayas with a sketch book and pencil he made
many friends - drawing the children, the old men and the many characters
encountered in these remote mountain villages. A recent trip to Mustang
on the border of Tibet and Nepal made a great impression on him and his
current work reflects this connection with Asia.
Many of his paintings are life size portraits of Asian women wearing traditional
dress. The rich, intricate designs and colours of the fabrics illustrate
and complement his talent as a portrait artist. The exuberance, detail and
sheer grandeur of his paintings are the result of many months of work.
Only a few paintings are produced each year. They have to be seen to be
believed. Over the years Ed van der Kooy has had regular exhibitions in
the Netherlands.

The realistic acrylic paintings are life-size, most of asian women . They
all wear traditional dresses with Ed taking as much trouble painting the
dresses as the faces . The result is a portrait that could well be in the
same class as the Dutch masters exhibited in the Amsterdam Museum .
